Banura Willy
Mr. Banura Willy is a long-serving wildlife educator and conservation practitioner who has devoted more than sixteen years to advancing professional training in Uganda’s wildlife and tourism sectors. He currently serves as the Head of the Natural Sciences Department and a Principal Instructor at the Uganda Wildlife Research and Training College (UWRTC), where he plays a central role in academic coordination, field training, and institutional development. His work is grounded in a deep commitment to producing competent, ethical, and hands-on wildlife professionals who can serve in national parks, tourism facilities, community conservation programs, and environmental research initiatives across the country.
Mr. Banura holds a Master of Science in Natural Resources Management from Mountains of the Moon University, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Botany and Zoology from Makerere University, and a Diploma in Education from Kyambogo University. These qualifications give him a strong scientific foundation in ecology, plant and animal biology, resource management, environmental protection, and instructional methods; making him an experienced trainer in both classroom and field environments.
He joined UWRTC in 2008, and over the years he has taught and mentored thousands of students pursuing careers in wildlife management, tourism guiding, ecological monitoring, community conservation, and natural resource protection. His teaching approach emphasizes practical skills development, ethical conduct, teamwork, discipline, and professionalism in the conservation sector.
Mr. Banura is actively involved in curriculum development, assessment design, and field training coordination, ensuring that training programs remain relevant to current industry needs and national conservation priorities. He has participated in field research, biodiversity assessments, and environmental education initiatives, further strengthening the link between theory and practice in conservation training.
He is widely respected by colleagues and students for his consistency, leadership, and commitment to student-centered training. He is known for his approachable demeanor, discipline, and dedication to maintaining high academic standards. His long period of service has made him a key contributor to the College’s mission of producing competent conservation professionals who are technically skilled and ethically grounded.
Through his work, graduates trained under his guidance now serve in Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), tourism businesses, conservation organizations, non-governmental agencies, research institutions, and various national and regional protected areas. His contribution to wildlife education continues to play an important role in strengthening Uganda’s conservation capacity and supporting sustainable natural resource management.
Mr. Banura Willy remains committed to advancing the quality of training at UWRTC, promoting effective field-based learning, contributing to curriculum improvement, and supporting the development of future wildlife managers and conservation professionals. He continues to aspire for a department that is research-driven, technologically equipped, and capable of producing graduates who can meet the ever-evolving demands of conservation and tourism in Uganda and beyond.
