Dr. Akampurira Emmanuel

Manager of research

Dr Emmanuel Akampurira (PhD) is the Manager of Research at UWRTC. He has a BSc in Wildlife Health and Management from Makerere University in Uganda, an MSc in Tropical Forestry from Bangor University in the UK and a PhD in Political Ecology of Wildlife Conservation from Ghent University in Belgium. As a manager, Dr Akampurira strategically oversee the development and implementation of research at UWRTC. Dr Akampurira has over 15 years of experience in research and wildlife management, and his work has taken him across borders, regionally (Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda) and globally (the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands). His research interests and expertise include human dynamics of wildlife conservation, human-wildlife coexistence, biodiversity monitoring and assessment, animal behaviour, and the impacts of development (e.g., oil and gas) on biodiversity conservation. Dr Akampurira has published widely in peer-reviewed journals-(https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=j-x9v38AAAAJ&hl=en).

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the African Conservation Telegraph (ACT) newsletter and chairs the regional council of the Society for Conservation Biology. Emmanuel is a member of the IUCN SSC Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence Specialist Group representing Uganda and Africa. He is a founding member of the African Golden Cat Conservation Alliance. Dr Akampurira is also a reviewer for Springer Nature and serves as an external examiner for Makerere University.
