Diploma in Wildlife Tourism Management (DWT)

Uganda’s wildlife-based tourism is a major driver of national development. This diploma prepares learners with modern competencies to support a fast-growing tourism sector and respond to emerging issues such as oil & gas development and community-based conservation.

Programme Rationale

Wildlife tourism continues to evolve at sub-national, national, and international levels. These changes demand graduates who can manage tourism resources responsibly, support conservation outcomes, and advise stakeholders in both public and private sectors. This diploma is designed to develop that human resource capacity for Uganda’s tourism priorities.

Aims of the Programme

  • Provide opportunity for Ugandans and the international community to obtain a wildlife tourism qualification for socio-economic development.
  • Enhance management and conservation of wildlife resources as a prerequisite for tourism by producing professionals for public and private tourism and conservation enterprises.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the socio-economic values of tourism resources and challenges to their productivity and survival.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and attitude to manage wildlife and create tourism enterprises.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to provide tourism-related advisory services.
  • Implement policies, legislation, and conventions in wildlife management and conservation practice.
  • Apply basic numerical analytical skills in decision-making and planning processes.
  • Address emerging issues affecting community conservation in shared natural resource contexts.
  • Equip learners with knowledge, values, and skills to be competitive in the job market.
  • Provide innovative and entrepreneurial skills for self-employment.
  • Build a foundation for growth in tourism and oil & gas sectors for national socio-economic development.
  • Impart health & safety, environmental, and biodiversity conservation consciousness for sustainable wildlife tourism.

Entry Requirements

  • Biology at O’ Level and a minimum of two principal passes at A’ Level. One principal pass must be in Geography, History, Christian & Moslem Religious Studies, Literature in English, or related subjects.
  • OR at least a credit in a certificate in tourism or a relevant field from a recognized institution.
